RIP Elmore Leonard

Uniquely American writer, bard of Detroit, chronicler of Florida, king of brevity, scourge of dialog tags, believer in The Solitary Man, lover of movies and idealized women, foe of unexamined whiteness, wielder of STICK, ambassador to the holds of crime-spree panel vans, observer of machinations in Naugahyde, underrated penman of old-style Westerns, romantic of LA BRAVA, fetishist of weaponry, effortlessly prolific, whip-crack observer of cadence, snare to the backbeat of speech, devotee to seventies soul and classic R&B, friend to conflicted cops and angelic bail bondsmen, beard of the unexpectedly gay character, architect of THE CITY PRIMEVAL, conqueror of bourbon and cheap wine, passport to Cuba and Haiti and Rwanda, flaunter of GLITZ, gleeful proponent of miscegenation, scribe responsible for Jennifer Lopez’s only good role, tailor of Travolta, silencer of Paul Newman, iconographer of Samuel Jackson, fabulist of the existence of a true “cool” available only to such males as are able to remain calm and even sardonic in violent situations, promoter of female competence, reveler in sociopathic fatales, minimalist of MAXIMUM BOB, unrepentant adjective Spartan, lover of the grizzled, the worn, the dentured, the torn, the alley, the ally, the fist, the Hawaiian shirt, the lonely doper, the muscle car, and down to the bone a truly gifted storyteller.

He is already sorely missed.

Right on, Judge. This is like a haiku…without the format, but retaining the impact.

I agree with you – he is missed already.
